30 april 2018 | sisimiut, west greenland qeqqata kommune hut - andy perkins ski group 2 26 april 2018 | sisimiut, west greenland qeqqata kommune hut - andy perkins ski group 1 24 april 2018 | sisimiut, west greenland qeqqata kommune hut - andy perkins ski group 1 24 april 2018 | sisimiut, west greenland qeqqata kommune hut - andy perkins ski group 1 1 2 3 4 5 older contents equalunguit 20 july 2018 | west greenland andy we are in a beautiful fjord on the south west side of disco island, it has no name on my chart, in fact my chart shows only a poor inaccurate outline and no soundings, but inuit come here to fish from the nearest small settlement 15nm away and it has a mention in the rcc cruising pilot where it is named as equalunguit. the water is very murky due to the rivers flowing into it, unlike the sea just outside which is clear to 10m. under the murk the hidden seabed is shallow, and this is why we are anchored so far out from the bay that promised good shelter. it transpired that the depth was just 2m so we had to settle with being stuck out in the main fjord. we have been fishing for char again today with some success, so we have just enjoyed a good dinner of this fantastic fish. it has been sunny all day with little wind so we have done the washing for the week, now left to hang outside in the continual sunshine. we also headed off into the hills for a walk and discovered a pretty lake hidden away. the flys discovered us to and they accompanied us most of the way, they are not too unfriendly, occasionally one will try to go up your nose or in your mouth but they are bearable, even the mosquitoes on the shore are quite mellow, they are also the slowest fliers ever so they are easy to swat with your hand. we would not make great buddhists. summer is in full flight; we saw our first eider duck with chicks yesterday carefully guiding her young away from the big red beast sailing on towards her brood, they were safe we don't eat eider - well not yet... picture: greenland grand scale, the only blight is the flies! comments add a comment show comments 0 ikamiut 16 july 2018 | west greenland janice yesterday we enjoyed a lovely quiet anchorage behind the village of ikamiut, having negotiated the shallow 1.3m, narrow 40m wide entrance the night before at high water. good mud with room to swing it was fine until last night when we had to re-anchor after a wind shift from north to south. at that point the wind comes across the fjord so we needed deeper water and a bit more space. but all done we had another peaceful night. raining again this morning we headed out. needing to check emails we cruised into the bay next to the village and drifted while andy did his office work. the added bonus was watching the grounded iceberg in 4m of water, calve a great chunk off and then proceeded to float away. we also had 3 humpback whales feeding in the bay, so engine off and we waited with coffee and millionaires shortcake. one giant got very curious and came closer, eventually surfacing 5m to our starboard side. it surfaced, blowed, sank or logged on the surface, sank, surfaced, blowed and slowly paralleled us. then when we thought it was going to dive, it did a half tail show and quickly span around to get another look at us, even closer before taking a final huge exhale and diving just off destiny's bow. awesome. i was up the mast and could see its white fins and tracked its movements easily, while andy was stood on the mast seat taking photos. ohh what a glorious moment. our patience was well rewarded. it is always an immense pleasure to be in close proximty to whales and to hear their breathing. we saw some locals come out on the shore to watch us. picture: curious humpback whale on our starboard side; it came to visit us comments add a comment show comments 0 now you see it, now you don't 15 july 2018 | west greenland janice having arrived in qasigiannguit we were checking outside before retiring at 11pm when the picture presented itself. we dropped the dingy in the water, added the outboard and whizzed ashore to see the iceberg that now half filled the bay on the outside of the fjord. the locals were also out visiting it, as well as the mosquitos!
